Apply for daycare/school
General infomation about early childhood education and care
In Finland, the child’s right to early childhood education begins from the beginning of the month when the child reaches the age of nine months. However, some parents take care of their children at home for longer.

Schools in North Karelia
Each municipality is responsible for arranging a place at a primary school for every child. Normally this is one of the schools close to the child’s home address. You can enroll at school. Degree and other studies in North Karelia
There are three major educational institutions offering qualification and degree studies in North Karelia.
Riveria
North Karelia Municipal Education and Training Consortium Riveria is one of the largest vocational education and training (VET) providers in Finland. Riveria organises vocational education and training in basic (upper secondary), further, and specialist qualifications, also liberal adult, and summer university education. Riveria’s operation covers the entire region of North Karelia formed by the 12 municipalities, the owners of Riveria. The training centres are located to Joensuu (the capital of North Karelia), Kitee, Lieksa, Nurmes, Outokumpu and Valtimo.
Karelia
Karelia university of applied sciences is a multidisciplinary, widely connected, international and innovative organization offering education leading to Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. Karelia UAS operates in seven study fields offering 21 programmes out of which five are master-level studies. The study areas are health care and social studies, business, engineering, forestry, media and hospitality management. Karelia UAS operates in two campuses in the close proximity of the Joensuu city centre in easternmost Finland.
University of Eastern Finland UEF
The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) is the most multidisciplinary and one of the leading universities in Finland also recognised internationally for its state-of-the-art research. It offers a wide range of Bachelor's, Master’s, and Doctoral degree programmes, as well as non-degree programmes, some being taught completely in English. UEF comprises four faculties: the Philosophical Faculty, the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology, the Faculty of Health Sciences, and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies. The UEF campuses are located in Joensuu and Kuopio.

Community College
In addition to the abovementioned, there are education centers (Finnish: ‘Kansalaisopisto’) that offer opportunities for a wide variety of recreational activities and study. Licence for social welfare and healthcare professionals
Both healthcare professionals who have graduated in Finland or abroad need to apply for licencing, the right to practice their profession in Finland or right to use protected occupational title from Valvira.
Hygiene Passport
Hygiene Passport is a certificate of one’s proficiency in food hygiene. One can get a Hygiene Passport by completing a hygiene passport test. Food hygiene proficiency is regulated by the food hygiene regulation (852/2004/EU), and the Food Act. Employees must have a Hygiene Passport if they handle unpackaged easily perishable foods at their workplace. For example cafeterias, restaurants, institutional kitchens, fast-food restaurants, food stores, and many factories manufacturing food are places where employees are required to have hygiene passports.
Alcohol Passport
Alcohol passport is a certificate of alcohol proficiency indicating knowledge of Alcohol Act and how it's supervised. The alcohol passport is needed if one is working as a responsible manager or as his/her substitute. The responsible manager and his/her substitutes are, besides the licence holder, responsible for overseeing that the licensed premises observe the provisions of the Alcohol Act.
The Occupational Safety Card
The national Occupational Safety Card training course has been developed for improving occupational safety at common workplaces. A personal Occupational Safety Card can be obtained by completing a one-day course and a written test. The Occupational Safety Card was developed by Finnish industrial companies together with labour market organisations, the insurance sector and training organisations.
Getting foreign qualifications recognized (OPH)
If you have completed a qualification abroad, you may need a decision on recognition of your qualification to be able to study or work in Finland. In most cases, the employer, educational establishment or higher education institution assesses the competence and skills that your foreign qualification provides.

The Finnish education system consists of:
- early childhood education and care (okm.fi – in English) which is provided for children before the compulsory education begins, (at the age of seven normally).
- pre-primary education (okm.fi – in English) which is provided for children in the year preceding the beginning of compulsory education,

The Martha Association
The Martha Association is a Finnish non-proft organization well-known for its dedication to educating the public in matters of home economics.
